Calima

Flamenco is a living tradition which demands invention, innovation and the constant reinterpretation of its basic forms. In this way it stays connected to its ancient roots while remaining open to an ever-widening sphere of influences. In the music of Calima you can hear the urgent rhythms, lyrical beauty and graceful virtuosity of Flamenco, music that yearns, mourns, and celebrates life. A typical performance by Calima will include one or two dances and the use of mandolin, bass and various percussion to compliment the core sound of guitars, Palmas, Cajon and footwork. Kevin Byrne composes most of the group’s music. As well as as his intense, distinctive guitar sound, he plays mandolin, bass and bodhran. Cuffy’s beautiful crafted guitar style perfectly compliments Kevin’s and together they weave rich and intricate webs of harmony and melody. The rhythmic eloquence, precision and power of Patsy Burrows’ Palmas and footwork underpin both the group’s sound and the grace and dignity of her dance. Kostka Garcia provides driving Cajon, joins Patsy on Palmas and adds delicate cymbal work.
